A paper by Daniotti et al. (2025) examines 80 million GitHub commits (2018–2024). The authors trained neural classifier to spot AI-generated Python functions in the GitHub code. As one can see below, nearly 1/3 of code in the US is being written by AI as of the end of 2024.
- US: 30.1%
- Germany: 24.3%
- France: 23.2%
- India: 21.6%
- Russia: 15.4%
- China: 11.7%
How valuable is the AI-generated code?
…the annual value of AI-assisted coding in the United States at $9.6–$14.4 billion, rising to $64–$96 billion if we assume higher estimates of productivity effects reported by randomized control trials.
Will half of code be generated by AI by the end of 2025 in the US? Stay tuned.
