In a recent move to enhance regulatory capacity, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has announced plans to hire 120 new management officials at the Assistant Manager (AM) level over the next three years. This decision, approved during a board meeting on 2 August 2024, aligns with IRDAI’s strategy to manage an expanding insurance market and adapt to evolving international standards.
According to minutes from the board meeting, released on 28 October, the regulator has observed substantial growth in India’s insurance sector. The board noted, “The past two years have seen a notable increase in the number of insurers entering the market, necessitating a robust regulatory framework to keep pace.” Additionally, the board underscored the importance of IRDAI’s adoption of Risk-Based Capital (RBC), Indian Accounting Standards (Ind AS), and a Risk-Based Supervisory Framework to align with global standards.
Starting in 2025, IRDAI will recruit 40 new Assistant Managers annually, with the goal of increasing the sanctioned AM headcount to 225 by 2027. This measure, the board emphasized, will enhance IRDAI’s capacity to carry out effective supervisory functions in the evolving regulatory landscape.
IRDAI Chairman Mr. Debasish Panda, who led the meeting, highlighted the insurance industry’s impressive performance in FY23-24. India’s insurance sector achieved a 7.5% growth in premium income, reaching INR11.17 trillion ($133 billion) by 31 March 2024. Within this growth, the life insurance sector saw a 6% increase, while general insurers experienced a substantial rise of 12.78%.
The momentum continued into the first quarter of FY2025 (April-June 2024), with overall premiums hitting INR2.60 trillion, marking a 14.5% growth year-over-year. Life insurance premiums rose by 14.7%, and general insurance premiums by 13.33%, signaling a continued upward trajectory for the industry.
With these new hires and a focus on adapting to international standards, IRDAI aims to ensure a well-regulated and resilient insurance sector for the years ahead.
