The GST Council has approved a set of rate reductions spanning select insurance products, medicines, agricultural inputs and daily-use items, calling the package a relief for households, farmers and industry. Officials said the cuts aim to lower out-of-pocket costs, support rural demand ahead of the festive season, and improve affordability of critical healthcare.
Alongside rate tweaks, the Council cleared procedural simplifications to streamline compliance for small and medium businesses and to speed refunds where working-capital is locked up. States welcomed the package as a growth-supportive step, while the Centre said the measures would be reviewed after implementation to gauge pass-through to consumers.
The Fitment Committee has been tasked with examining additional representations from sectors seeking rationalisation, with further recommendations expected at the next meeting. Consumer advocates urged insurers, pharma firms and retailers to reflect the cuts in final prices promptly so that benefits reach end-users without delay.
